I’ve always had a love of photography. When I was younger, the subject didn’t matter as much as the thrill of getting the perfect shot. I photographed flowers and mountains, landmarks and monuments. I filled album upon album, but I rarely looked back at the pages. Something was missing. After I got beyond the initial satisfaction of creating a good image, the photos lost their appeal to me. It wasn’t until after I became a mother and began photographing my children that I discovered my true photographic passion – portraiture.
I became entranced by the power of a portrait – the emotion a single image could evoke: a feeling of warmth toward the little one who stole your heart the day she was born, a little laugh at the ornery gleam in your son’s eye, a swelling of pride knowing you call those people your family, a touch of wistfulness knowing how much they’ve changed since that portrait was taken, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude realizing how you’ve been blessed by those you love.
Portraits of my family are the art in my home. They bring me more joy than any museum masterpiece could. As I walk through my home and gaze at the images of my children, I am reminded of special moments and milestones in our lives. The portraits tell the story of our family – where we’ve been, where we are – and provide a glimpse of where we’re headed together. They are the heirlooms my children will treasure when they have children of their own. They are my investment in our family’s legacy.
